Massage Therapies
Massage therapy is the practice of applying structured or unstructured pressure, tension, motion, or vibration -- manually or with mechanical aids -- to the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, joints, lymphatic vessels, and organs of the gastrointestinal system to achieve a beneficial response.
Our massage therapists bring a wide range of skills to our office. Additionally, our therapists each bring their own specialties to the practice. Gail Lyon has experience in breast massage and baby massage. Shawn Duncan and Jeremy Lippincott have experience in sports training and sports massage. Many of the treatments that our therapists are trained to do include myoskeletal alignment technique, neuromuscular therapy, petrissage, soft tissue therapy, lomilomi (traditional Hawaiian massage), craniosacral therapy, deep tissue massage, effleurage, chair massage, and trigger point therapy. Myoskeletal alignment technique identifies postural distortions to improve pain conditions.
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and myofascial techniques are used to lengthen tight muscles while fiber activation techniques tone weak muscles. Neuromuscular therapy is used for pain relief and specific problems. Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. This therapy is most often utilized to treat neurological disorders including A.D.H.D., autism, and acute stress disorders. Effleurage consists of long, flowing or gliding strokes, performed with open hands to promote relaxation. Petrissage is performed with kneading movements with the whole palm or finger tips, applied to the muscle tissue. Lomilomi is a deep and rhythmical massage that works gently, but deeply into the muscles. We are excited to be able to bring medical massage to you.
Medical News
In our lives today, we have many new technologies, more leisure time, and longer lives. However, computers can be hazardous to your health. We suffer sports injuries from leisure activities and as we age, our bodies seem to ache. The staff at Pain Alternatives, Inc., is uniquely trained to help with these conditions. Working on computers is a daily fact of life. Increasingly, patients are coming to doctors complaining of musculoskeletal symptoms of repetitive strain (or stress) injuries.
Baby Boomers are experiencing the pains that come with age and illnesses associated with their active lifestyles. For example, cases of osteoarthritis are much higher than a decade ago. Sports injuries among Baby Boomers increased by 33 percent from 1991 to 1998. It is easier to get injured and it takes longer to heal sprains and strains as we age. That is not to say that Baby Boomers cannot exercise, they only need to exercise smarter. Instead of strenuous workouts, change to less intense exercises.
Our staff of health professionals can help up you with your injuries, give you information to help prevent injuries, and help you develop an exercise program that is beneficial without incurring injuries.
